Crompton decline invite for 20/20 event

GOLF: CROMPTON have confirmed they will not play in next season’s Twenty20 Competition - unless the CLL changes the group set-up.

In the four years of the competition, Crompton have been grouped with Walsden, Littleborough and Milnrow.

But club spokesman Glenn Dawson said: “When the original meeting for the competition was held at Royton we were told we would be grouped with Oldham, Royton and Werneth, which would have been ideal.

“But then Ashton said they could not commit to their group because of the travelling involved.

“They were then put in with the three we should have been with and we were switched.

“This competition is all about making some money for the clubs and we have not been doing so.

“Unless the league changes the groups, we will not be taking part.

“The competition is by invitation. It is not a league rule you have to take part.

“As things stand we won’t be taking up the invitation.”

Crompton may search other avenues for Twenty20 opponents, but nothing has been formally decided at this stage.

Ian McGloughlin, Martin Lewis, Steve Taylor and Barry Lewis combined to win a four-man Stableford event at Oldham with 93 points.
They won a card play-off against Gary Williams, Pete Sparks, Paul Rainford and Owen Williams.

Third, with 91 points, were Steve Butler, Cliff Butler, Jim Wilson and Harold McGuinness.

A four-ball better-ball Stableford saw Frank Lawrence and Lee Blainey come out on top with 41 points.

Mick Ganley and Alan Squires (40 points) were runners-up following a card play-off against Stuart Wagstaffe and Dave Ganley.
