BOXING: TEENAGE boxing talent Ronnie Heffron has already gone toe-to-toe with one world champion as he count downs to his professional bow in Newcastle tomorrow.

Trainer Anthony Farnell revealed that the 19-year-old has prepared for his fight by sparring with Amir Khan, who heads a star-studded line-up at the Metro Radio Arena.

And Heffron was far from daunted by the prospect of facing the current WBA light-welterweight belt holder from Bolton.

Farnell said: “Ronnie has looked awesome in the gym. He’s had a couple of sparring sessions with Amir Khan and he bettered him on both occasions.

“He’s ruthless and takes your breath away. His hand speed is unbelievable. By the time I’ve thrown one jab, he’s unleashed four shots.”

Heffron is first up on the bill at 5.45pm in a four-round welterweight contest against journeyman pro Chris Brophy from Swansea.

The Welshman is a late replacement for Londoner Duncan Cottier, who has pulled out because of injury.

Brophy has lost 38 of his 43 bouts — he has won three and drawn two of the other five — but has plenty of experience.

Farnell, the former WBU middleweight champion, can’t wait for Heffron’s pro debut after following his career for the past five years.

The ex-junior and senior ABA champion linked up with Farnell six months ago after signing a deal with the Frank Warren camp.

Heffron could have set himself a goal of making the Great Britain team for the London Olympics in 2012, but instead he opted for the paid ranks — and Farnell is tipping the youngster to go all the way.

He said: “Ronnie has got a great talent and the world is his oyster as long as he keeps his feet on the ground.

“I’ve known him for five years and he looked like a pro when he was 14.

“The kid is unbelievable and works really hard. He’s the type of boxer who gets you really excited.”

Heffron is one of clutch of rising stars who will be in action in front of a 12,000 sell-out crowd.

He is joined on the star-studded bill by Frankie Gavin and Tony Bellew, who also hail from the Farnell stable, as well as Olympic gold medalist James DeGale, Kevin Mitchell and Billy Joe Saunders.
