Mick’s treble proves in vain

THERE were some notable performances in defeat in several matches in the Oldham Table Tennis League first division.

Mick Hill was the star of the show, winning three, but his BAE B team went down 6-4 in a close encounter against Werneth B, for whom Gary Skinner and Doug Hill won two each.

Werneth A beat a two-man Saddleworth team 7-3 with all Saddleworth’s point being won by Darren Lindley, including a tight 11-8 in the fifth over Darryl Meredith.

Glodwick beat Hollinwood B 9-1 with Andy Jackson and Graham Young both being unbeaten, while Wayne Renton maintained his unbeaten record as Honeywell A beat Hyde YMCA A 9-1.

At the halfway stage of the season, Darryl Meredith (Werneth) leads the most-wins category with 32, ahead of M Ramsbottom (Glodwick) 26, K.Hussein (Glodwick), T.Smith (BAE), I.Mclean (Saddleworth), P.Morris (Werneth) and D.Hadfield (Saddleworth) all on 23.

Hollinwood E had a good 8-2 win over Honeywell D in the second division with maximums from John Flowers and Paul King, but Hollinwood F lost 8-2 to Hyde YMCA B in a match that was tighter than the score suggests.

Mick Pellowe won three as Werneth D beat Droylsden 7-3, while Hollinwood C maintained their promotion challenge with a 7-3 win over Unison A, Mohammed Sajid being unbeaten.

Most wins: Mike Pellowe (Werneth) 29, P Howarth (Coldhurst) 28, B Royle (Honeywell) 23, M Simpson (Uppermill) 23, S Hilton (Hyde YMCA) 22.

In the third division, Grotton B lost 7-3 to Unison B with Paul Whyatt unbeaten for Unison and Steve Smith winning two for Grotton.

On the adjoining table, Unison’s D team went down 6-4 to Coldhurst B for whom Gary Keylock was unbeaten.

Dave Harthan and Paul Woodward were unbeaten for Owls A in their 8-2 win over Coldhurst D.

Most wins: B Huskinson (St Saviour’s) 32, I Cockcroft (Deaf Club) 30, P Whyatt (Unison) 29, G Keylock (Coldhurst) 24, D Brown (Coldhurst) 22.

Deaf Club B stayed at the top of the fourth division by beating Owls B 7-3. Matt Gartside was undefeated for the Deaf Club.

Werneth E are a point behind after winning 6-4 at home to Glodwick Academy, Phil Coombe being unbeaten for Werneth and Abdul Gufar winning two for Glodwick.
