Glodwick win top-two clash

TABLE TENNIS: GLODWICK won the battle of the top two sides in the first division of the Oldham Table Tennis League, winning 7-3 against Werneth A despite Darryl Meredith winning his three for Werneth.

The result leaves Glodwick 24 points clear at the top of the table.

Honeywell B had a good 8-2 win away at Grotton with the highlight being Phil Myers treble, including a close win over Shaun Ellis who won Grotton’s points.

Saddleworth A beat Werneth B 7-3 with Paul Cichelli and Ian Mclean recording maximums and Tony Prescott winning one.

Hollinwood A beat Honeywell B 9–1 with maximums for George Jones and Tristran Swan.

Honeywell B pushed BAE A all the way but just lost out 7-3, Mark Aspden’s treble proving decisive for BAE.

Rosehill had two good wins to allay any relegation fears. They first beat Grotton 6-4, despite Shaun Ellis winning three for Grotton. Rosehill then defeated BAE B 7-3 with Richard Sarre, Andy Perry and Phil Ashworth all winning two each. The in-form Mick Hill was undefeated for BAE.

Hollinwood B beat Werneth C 7-3 with Adam Rowbotham undefeated.

Division two leaders Coldhurst A consolidated their position with a 7–3 defeat of Hollinwood D 7-3. There were maximums for Coldhurst’s Paul Howarth and Simon King.

Werneth D dented Honeywell C’s title challenge by holding them to a 5-5 draw, thanks mainly to Mike Pellowe’s treble.

Hollinwood C kept up their promotion challenge with a 7-3 win over Hyde YMCA B despite Steve Hilton winning three for Hyde.

Hollinwood E had a tremendous 8–2 win over Unison A with Paul King notching another treble and two each for John Flowers and Callum Jones.

Hollinwood D beat Pennine 7-3 with Andy Evans winning three.

Saddleworth B continue to concede the big points in the third division, losing four five setters in a 10-0 defeat to Coldhurst C and then a number of other close games in going down 8-2 to Uppermill.

Coldhurst D lost 7-3 at home to St Saviour’s A, with Brian Huskinson winning three for the Saints and Phil Mellor two for the home side.

Table-toppers Deaf Club A just prevailed 6-4 at home to Coldhurst B. Ian Cockcroft and Pete Dawson won two each for the Deaf Club with Darren Brown and Gary Keylock doing likewise for the visitors.

Unison B also had a close 6-4 win over Coldhurst C with Paul Whyatt’s treble proving decisive for Unison.

Unison C kept up the pressure at the top with 9-1 defeats of their D team, where there were maximums for Frank Sheldon and James Bollard, and also Gilders where Frank Sheldon and Mike O’Gara won three each.

There was a late night due to some very close games at Honeywell where their E team beat Owls A 7-3 with Alan Wynn scoring a treble.

Gilders beat Grotton B 7-3 with Mark Craven winning 3 for Gilders and Alf Barker 2 for Grotton.

Werneth E moved to the top of the fourth division with a 9-1 win over Our Lady’s B team with maximums for Darren Mitzi and Phil Coombe. James Chappell’s defeat of Joe Taylor was Our Lady’s only consolation.

A two-man Owls B team lost 7-3 at home to Honeywell F for whom John Rutland was unbeaten.

Our Lady’s C had a hard-fought draw with Deaf Club C, with two wins each for Our Ladys’ Yonni Morrison and Callum Allman. Alan Cockcroft won three for Deaf Club.

The improving Counthill side of Tom Farrell, Adam Newton and Bobby Crossley made Werneth F pull out all the stops for their 7-3 win.

Glodwick Academy beat Werneth G 8-2 with Zac Rajput and Abdul Gufar both winning three.

Coldhurst E lost 7-3 at home to St Saviour’s B. Jacob Reilly, Josh Poole and Tom Lowe all winning two each for the visitors.
