AMATEUR FOOTBALL: SNOW and ice made last weekend a miserable one for the town’s amateur footballers and officials as all matches were postponed.

Hollinwood could have moved into second place in the premier division of the Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester League with victory over lowly Heys and it is a shame that the only winner was the weather itself.
A glance at the Manchester League table shows that all four of our local sides are in the top 10, with Avro and Hollinwood the two sides looking most likely of the quartet to challenge for the title.
League action aside, there is a mouth-watering match to look forward to on January 2 as Royton Town and Avro lock horns in the quarter-final of the Gilgryst Cup at Crompton Cricket Club (1.30pm).
Hollinwood are also in the last eight of the competition — Paul Bennett’s side travels to play Rochdale Sacred Heart at Fox Park, Rochdale, on the same day.
Diggle’s next match in the Huddersfield and District League’s first division is on January 2 when victory over Britannia Sports could move Steve Southern’s men into second place.
Uppermill will be hoping for a bright start to the new year when they travel to Cumberworth.
In division four, second-placed Heyside are away at Fenay Bridge.
The D&J Builders (North West) Ltd Oldham Sunday League resumes on January 10 with a full programme of fixtures.
