Phil has the power as Coldhurst edge thriller

TABLE TENNIS:
THERE was a cracking encounter in round one of the Oldham and District Table Tennis League’s Handicap Cup competition.
Coldhurst ‘D’, the hosts, overcame Grotton ‘B’ by a single point, 543-542, in division three.
Phil Mellor was superb for Coldhurst, while Neil Tomlinson excelled for Grotton.
In division four, Deaf Club ‘C’ recorded a thrilling win over a young of Our Lady’s ‘B’ team, thanks to victory in the last set of doubles.
James Chappell recovered 25 points for Saints, but it was in vain as they slipped to a 477-471 defeat.
There were also wins for Werneth ‘E’ and Werneth ‘G’.
The performance of the round went to Darryl Meredith, who managed a massive 74-point gain, but he couldn’t prevent his Werneth ‘A’ team from going down by 16 points to Hyde YMCA ‘A’ in division one.
Grotton ‘A’ defeated table-toppers Glodwick, Hollinwood ‘B’ overcame their ‘A’ team and Honeywell ‘B’ emerged victorious against Saddleworth ‘A’.
In division two, Droylsden had a narrow 11-point win over Unison ‘A’, while they were also victories for Pennine over Hollinwood ‘F’, Hollinwood ‘C’ against their ‘D’ team and Werneth ‘D’ over Uppermill ‘A’.
