RUGBY UNION:
OLDHAM ‘A’ recorded a superb 32-17 win at a strong Eccles ‘A’ outfit.
The Manor Park men trailed 10-3, but three tries in a 10-minute purple patch turned the game in their favour.
Oldham were awarded a scrum five yards from the line and their heavier pack simply shoved the Eccles eight over to provide an easy try for Mike Green.
The next try was all down to Rob Froggett. Taking a quick tap penalty on the 22-metre line, he shrugged off three tackles to touch down.
Froggett converted his own try to put Oldham into a 15-10 lead.
Forwards and backs combined to score Oldham’s third try. Following a rolling maul, scrum half Matty Collins released Owen Davies. He passed to Froggett, who in turn fed Nathan Taylor to score in the right-hand corner.
With a 20-10 lead at half-time, Oldham looked to be in command, but Eccles threw everything at them in the next 20 minutes and their backs were afforded too much space in which to run.
However, Oldham’s defence stayed strong and, when two Eccles players and Oldham’s Rob Froggett were sent to the sin bin, the visitors regained the initiative.
Stuart Brennan ran the ball from inside his own 22 and evaded three tackles before feeding big second-row man Andy Wood, who strode through to score wide on the left.
With two minutes remaining, Eccles scored a consolation try but Oldham, whose Nathan Taylor was voted man of the match, fully deserved their victory.
JOHN Selby scored a decisive late try as Oldham Vets/3rds defeated Dukinfield 2nds 22-12.
Oldham led 7-0 at half-time thanks to Mark Fitton’s try and Selby’s conversion and when Pete Whitehurst scored another try early in the second half, the local side looked to be in charge.
However, two tries from Dukinfield changed the game and, with Oldham leading 15-12, the result could have gone either way before Selby won a race to the corner and followed up his try with a conversion.
OLDHAM 4ths defeated their Burnage counterparts 23-8 with tries from Tom Ashcroft, Lee Whitehead, Luke Rothwell and John Lowe.
But the under-14s went down 25-12 to their opposite numbers from Ashton-under-Lyne despite touchdowns from Thad Kenney and Ryan Arundale.
Oldham Colts saw off Buxton Colts 31-12 with tries from Callum Megran, Josh Watson, Phil Marsh, Oliver Bernasconi and Jacob Connor, plus three conversions by Megran.
