NON LEAGUE FOOTBALL:

ASHTON United’s Hurst Cross will stage Mossley’s ‘home’ game against FC Halifax Town (February 2).

Neighbours United answered the call to host the Lilywhites’ biggest match of the season in UniBond League division one north after the six remaining floodlights at Seel Park were condemned.

The pylons, which were erected in 1972, were inspected after two collapsed over New Year. They were deemed dangerous and have been removed.

This means, with the league’s permission, Mossley can play Saturday matches at home, but with earlier kick-off times.

However, the club was still on the look-out for a ground to fulfil a number of evening games. In stepped United, fixture clashes permitting.

Mossley secretary Harry Hulmes said: “I would like to express our sincere gratitude to Ashton United and especially chairman Dave Aspinall and secretary Bryan Marshall.

“They are genuine life-savers in our time of need. If we can assist them at any time in the future, we will do all we can.”

Mossley will have a new man at the helm for the visit of Halifax after manager Chris Willcock resigned to take up the No2 job at Stalybridge Celtic. He has been replaced by his assistant John Flanagan.

CHADDERTON manager Paul Buckley saluted his side’s character after they repelled a fightback to beat Eccleshall 3-2 in division one of the Vodkat North-West Counties League.

The win, thanks to a hat-trick from Leon Walters, lifted the Broadway outfit to 13th in the table..

Buckley said: “I couldn’t fault the players’ willingness to work for each other.

“The pitch was heavy and they were out for the count at the final whistle, but they somehow stuck at it.”

Chadderton, who visit Cheadle Town on Saturday, are in action tonight, with a friendly at home to Mossley (7.30pm).

TOM HUGHES is back among the Oldham Boro ranks — much to the delight of boss Tony Mills.

The attacking midfielder, who remains the club’s leading scorer this season despite switching to Trafford in the autumn, will line-up for Boro against Manchester League side Avro in a friendly at the Whitebank Stadium tonight (7.30pm) but is unavailable for Boro’s long trip to Holker Old Boys on Saturday.
