RUGBY:

WATERHEAD under-16s blew away Cumbrian outfit Askam 60-10 in a masterclass of attacking rugby.

Displaying pace, variety and quality, the local side scored 11 tries and had built up an unassailable 32-0 lead by the break in the National Cup tie.

Waterhead try-scorers were Johnathan Fouldes (three), Jack Cooke (two), Jake Shoel, Adam Steeple, Josh Johnson, Ryan Gordon, Nathan Mason and Luke Du Feu. Ben Whitehead weighed in with eight goals.

With tries from Michael Tattersall, captain Anthony Mellor, Luc Kinder (three), Sam Wilson (three), Jordan Hanley (two) and Curtis Robinson, the club’s under-17s recorded an emphatic 54-4 victory over Langworthy Reds.

Kinder also kicked five conversions in the game which was switched to Waterhead Park because of fog at Counthill.

SADDLEWORTH Rangers under-15s earned a place in the quarter-finals of the North-West Counties Cup with a convincing 64-0 win over Oldham St Anne’s.

They ran in 13 tries, with Ben White converting six, in a slick display of passing to end their local rivals’ hopes of progressing through to the last eight of the competition.

Ryan Maneely opened the scoring after five minutes, with further first-half touch downs coming from man-of-the-match Josh Bradbury, Chris Bolton (three) and Lewis Galbraith for a 38-0 lead.

The points continued to pile up in the second half, with Bolton taking his try-tally to four and Galbraith completing a hat-trick.

Scott Booth, Jon Casson and Ross Hansford also touched down for Rangers, who now meet Pilkington Recs at home in the last eight.

The club’s under-12s conceded two tries in the first 10 minutes in a 10-4 defeat by Leigh Miners Rangers on Churchill playing fields.

Torrid defending followed by a determination to score saw Nathan Knowles reduce the deficit.

Rangers dominated afterwards and could have won the game, only for handling errors to thwart their endeavours.

Ali Hassan was man-of-the-match, while the coaches award went to skipper Tom Jowle.

OLDHAM St Anne’s under-16s paid the penalty for a poor first half display as they lost 22-14 at home to Wigan St Pat’s in the North-West Counties League premier division.

Pat’s were 10 points to the good at the interval, but Saints improved in the second period, with better defensive and more attacking sets.

Martyn Swaine spearheaded the fightback after collecting a ‘bomb’ from Kendal Davies, and Jarrod Ward got on the end of a planned move for try number two. Both goal attempts were missed.

Josh Ogden dribbled the ball more than 20 metres for Saints’ third score, with the conversion this time successful from Swaine, but Pat’s had done enough to clinch victory.

The under-11s matched a well-drilled Leigh East side in every department before succumbing 16-14.

Strong in the tackle, Saints broke the deadlock courtesy of a Ryan Croft try.

Leigh East hit back with a converted try, but Saints responded with an Owen Baldwin effort — he emerged from underneath a pile of bodies — for an 8-6 lead at the interval

It was also nip and tuck in the second half. East Leigh nosed ahead before James Barran forced his way through to score — the goal attempt was successful — to give the visitors a 14-10 lead with eight minutes to go.

But the hosts refused to throw in the towel and registered a converted try to snatch the points.

SHAW Rhinos under-16s were beaten 44-6 by Castleford Panthers in the National Cup.

Sam Bentley scored Shaw’s try, which was converted by Jon Botham.
