Heyside slip after late equaliser

AMATEUR FOOTBALL: HEYSIDE fell at the first hurdle in the Groom Cup, losing 4-2 after extra-time at Huddersfield and District League division three title-chasers Holmbridge.

Goalless at half-time — the visitors wasted several chances — Heyside finally broke the deadlock thanks to a Scott Rowbottom strike.

They continued to miss some gilt-edged opportunities and paid the price when a goalmouth scramble in the last minute saw Heyside denied by an own goal.

The last-gasp equaliser lifted Holmbridge, who went ahead in the first period of extra time.

The hosts added a third before Carl Winstanley reduced the deficit almost immediately for the division four side.

But, pushing men forward in search of an equaliser, Heyside conceded a fourth on the break.

Uppermill’s renaissance continued with a 2-0 win over basement boys Wooldale Wanderers. The result lifted Paul Waterhouse’s side to sixth in division one.

Diggle reserves are through to round three of the Richardson Cup after an emphatic 6-0 win at Shepley reserves.

In reserve division two, a first-half double from Courtney Atkinson set Heyside on their way to a 4-1 win over Slaithwaite United.

The visitors pulled a goal back shortly after the interval, but efforts from Chris Taylor and Leon Perry in the final 15 minutes sealed victory.

Uppermill ‘A’ also picked up maximum points thanks to a 3-1 win at Wooldale Wanderers.

Still ahead at the break, the visitors came under increasing pressure and Villa equalised from a free-kick.

Paul Marsh missed a chance to put Santos ahead before Villa scored their second goal from another set-piece.

OIdham Victoria were without a fixture, but their reserves beat Chorltonians fourths 2-1 in division ‘C’.
