BOXING: TWO local boxers are on course for glory in prestigious tournaments.
Stephen Kremner, aged 18, and Danny Wright (13) are both members of Boarshaw Boxing Club in Middleton.
Stephen, from Delph and a pupil at Hopwood Hall College, reached the National Association of Clubs For Young People under-19 64kg quarter-finals with a unanimous points verdict over Middleton’s Alex Taylor at Gorton Leisure Centre on Sunday.
Stephen dominated the centre of the ring against an opponent fancied to win the competition and landed some decisive counter punches.
His quarter-final will be held on February 14 at Walcott Sports Centre, Liverpool.
Danny, from Failsworth, also registered a unanimous points verdict against Farnworth’s Jamie Kilpatrick to reach the quarter-finals of the National Golden Gloves Championship.
Competing in the under-14s 52kg section, Danny controlled his bout on the same bill as club-mate Stephen.
Danny will be bidding to reach the semi-finals when he takes on an opponent from the Midlands in Liverpool this weekend.
Both boxers are trained by Boarshaw head coach Ben Lancaster, who is currently putting together the bill for the club’s annual show at Middleton Arena on Thursday, March 4.
