ANGLING:
THE Hebden Bridge lengths of the Rochdale Canal suffered from a hard overnight frost as weights plummeted.
Anglers fishing the second round of the TRI-CAST Rochdale teams of four winter league found a very different canal facing them this time around and struggled to put a few fish together.
Winner on the day was Brian Meadows with one bream taken on bread punch fished down the deeper middle track weighing in at 3lb 5oz 8drams.
Pete Riley was second, with bread punch tempting 2lb 9oz of small roach, followed by a similar net weighing 2lb 4oz 8drams taken by Stuart Webster.
Teamwise it was Fox Match Red who took the spoils with 31 points, followed by Trabrucco Halifax (30) and TRI-CAST Rochdale Black (29).
Fox Match Red now lead the league with 59 points from TRI-CAST Rochdale Black (50) and TRI-CAST Rochdale Red (49).
THE Angling Trust has managed to survive it’s first year but membership is nowhere near the 20,000 that they had projected.
The Trust do a brilliant job representing anglers and campaigning for angling but do need more support.
At present the Trust has just four full-time staff and four part-timers. You can join the Trust by logging onto their website www.anglingtrust.net or phoning 0844 7700616.

Venue Guide
Huddersfield Narrow Canal – Mossley lengths okay for a few small fish. Bread punch and pinkie for small roach and perch. Odd better fish showing.
Rochdale Canal – Not many anglers fishing but there are a fair few good pegs to go at. Bream bend on the Boarshaw and Slattocks lengths throw up some amazing catches at daft times of the year. The pegs on the chicken run are also worth a try. As usual bread punch and flouro pinkie the best bets although caster or red maggot also worth a try as a change bait. Todmorden lengths fishing okay with noted swims the best.
Chadderton Mill lodge – Carp, skimmers and ide are all feeding on this fantastic water. Red maggot and pellet both working well although maggot will get you more bites.
Hollingworth Lake – Incredibly this water still has plenty of ice on it but that’s not stopping pike anglers. Anglers are still fishing the ice-free parts of the lake and are catching, although not a lot. Dead baits and spinning are what those hardy souls are using.
