AMATEUR RUGBY:

OLDHAM St Anne’s ‘A’ registered a great win in division one of the Kukri North-West Counties League.

Saints inflicted only the second defeat of the season on second-placed Bold Miners after an impressive win 16-4 at Stoneleigh Park.

New signing Terry Whaley, from Saddleworth Rangers, had a fine debut and was involved in setting up Saints’ first try for his wing partner Dave Cavanagh. Ben Fitzhugh added the extras.

Miners, who started the day five points adrift of table-toppers Leigh East, reduced the deficit just before half-time with an unconverted try from Lee Mayor.

But two penalties from Fitzhugh gave Saints some vital breathing space before substitute Rick Badby and Andy Deakin created the opening for Paul Garrett to score under the posts. Fitzhugh made sure of victory with a simple conversion.

Man-of-the-match Rob Proudman had a superb game at prop forward, so too Sean Hamilton, Kevin Collins and veteran Garrett.

Meanwhile, there was relief in the Saddleworth Rangers camp after they finally got off the mark in division three.

Rooted to the foot of the table with only point from their previous seven league games, they broke their duck with a 34-10 win over Hindpool Tigers.

The result lifted Rangers one place and demoted Langworthy Reds to bottom spot.

Rochdale Cobras enhanced their promotion hopes in division five with an excellent 30-7 victory at St Helens Wild Boar, in third.
