Harriers show up well

ATHLETICS: OLDHAM & Royton Harriers athletes put in some solid performances at the North of England cross-country championships in Witton Park, Blackburn.
Leading the way was Adam Howard, who finished the under-15 boys race in 13mins 49secs for sixth place.
In the under-13s races, the local youngsters did well on their first appearance on the big stage.
Christopher Brown ran 11:41 for 20th place, followed by Bradley Healey 80th in 12:31, Nathan Hilditch 170th in 14:29, Luke Brierley 172nd in 14:31 and James Riley 184th in 20:15 to take the team to 20th place overall.
Jade Pearlman brought the girls home in 145th place in 14:28, with Lucy Kershaw 165th in 14.50, Rachel Emmott 175th in 14:59 and Emma Burman 180th in 15.05. The team finishedin 24th position.
Jane Augsburger finished strongly in 34th in 24:00 for the under-17 women’s race, while in the senior men’s race Michael Mannings finished 95th in 46:22 and Brian Schofield 458th in 1:00:38.
COMPETITION among Royton Road Runners looks strong judging by the performance of members in Sunday’s Dewsbury 10k road race, the first of 17 such events which make up Royton’s 2010 Club Championship.
Despite some absences through injury, 22 Royton runners braved the early-morning cold and 15 of them finished inside 45 minutes.
Stuart Carroll, first Royton runner home in 36mins 39secs recorded a personal best, as did Chris Eavers (41:39).
Carole Madden (40:17) won third prize in the FV45 category.
Bernie Cassidy was the second Royton runner to finish - second V50 in 38:18, while Dave Phillips won the V65 category in 43:13.
