Goal-den hot-shots

AMATEUR FOOTBALL; GOLDEN BUCK reached the semi-finals of the Ashton Sunday League’s Vic Marsden Trophy with an 8-1 demolition of Home Guard.

Blundell and Siddall scored two goals apiece, with Miller, Savage and Wilkinson, plus an own goal, making up the tally.

In the league, Warwick United had goalkeeper Potts to thank for rescuing a point at home to Dog and Partridge.

The visitors went ahead in the first half through an own goal but, with time running out, Potts popped up in the opposition penalty box to equalise from close range.

Hat-tricks from Lomas and Bates inspired Charlestown to a thumping 9-3 defeat of Shaw Rovers.

Carroll, West and Moore were also on target for ’Town, while Large and Grimes (two) replied for Rovers.

Goals from Thomson and Whitehurst were in vain as second-in-the-table Moston Labour Club slipped to a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Kippax FC.

LOCAL SIDES DRAW A BLANK

THERE was disappointment in abundance for local sides in the Lancashire and Cheshire League.

AFC Oldham 2005 were beaten 2-1 at Newton in division one, while Oldham Victoria slumped to a 5-1 defeat at Aldermere in division two and Santos FC lost 4-1 at Tintwistle Athletic.

Santos were always struggling on the artificial surface, but it wasn’t until the last minute of the first half that they were finally opened up, ironically after their best spell of the game.

Athletic doubled their lead in dubious circumstances, the striker appearing in an offside position before running through to score.

Santos had a great chance to reduce the deficit, but James Stockton shot wide.

And they were to pay for that miss when Athletic added to their tally.

Santos did score a consolation, however, Adam McKinney following up a Stockton header.
