AMATEUR RUGBY: HIGGINSHAW got back to winning ways with a 40-0 home rout of Widnes Tigers, a victory which sees the team move into third place in division four.
Jonathan Fullalove made an outstanding debut for Higginshaw, scoring a try and nailing two touchline conversions after taking over the kicking duties and he was ably supported by forward trio man-of-the-match Scott Foote, Carl Fields and the impressive Michael Cadd.
Higgy dominated from start to finish and were 20-0 up by half-time thanks to tries from Sean Stubbs, Adam Horabin (two) and Anthony Sweeney and two Chris Tomlin goals.
Widnes had enjoyed a period of pressure with 18 tackles in a row near the Higginshaw line, but a firm defence held out.
In the second half, the home side stepped up a gear and Fields, Fullalove — after some superb passing — Foote and John Duffy all went over, with Fullalove kicking two goals.
Waterhead ‘A’ remain well in the hunt for promotion from division five.
They are now second in the table following a 44-8 home win over Bolton Mets, scoring tries through hooker Chris Brown (two), stand-off and man-of-the-match Aaron Brown (two), second row Chris Godfrey, centre Jack Burns and full-back Ashley Wildman. Scrum-half Michael Bennett kicked six goals.
Oldham St Anne’s ‘A’ were beaten 50-6 in division one, Saddleworth Rangers ‘A’ picked up only a second win of the season in division three, defeating Langworthy Reds 42-16 away from home, and in division five Rochdale Cobras thrashed Newton Storm 74-0 at home.
KIEL LANCASHIRE and Michael Coates are neck-and-neck in the race to become this season’s Man of Steel.
Oldham St Anne’s half-back Lancashire has been at the heart of the team’s renaissance this term, with the Higginshaw Road side seemingly on the way back after dropping into division two of the National Conference League.
Coates, who won this award two seasons ago jointly with team-mate Chris Garforth, continues to make Saddleworth Rangers tick and has been a vital member of a side currently top of the division one standings.
One man-of-the-match nomination behind the top pair — who have collected five apiece so far — are Hollinwood duo Pete Jackson and Alistair Williams, St Anne’s hooker Danny Kay and half-back Terry Fitzgerald of Waterhead.
Higginshaw prop Michael Cadd is a further vote behind on three for the campaign.
Joseph Parr (Alco) Ltd Man of Steel award standings (number of man-of-the-match awards in brackets): Michael Coates, Kiel Lancashire (five); Pete Jackson, Alistair Williams, Danny Kay, Terry Fitzgerald (four); Michael Cadd (three).
