AMATEUR RUGBY: A REMARKABLE comeback from Oldham St Anne’s saw them come from 14 points down to see off Egremont Rangers in National Conference League division two.

The final score of 42-24 puts Mick Cashin’s side firmly back in promotion contention after a sticky period and Saints are now second in the table, two points behind Eccles with a game in hand.

Saints started the better but the Cumbrians took the lead at Higginshaw Road through a John Paul Brocklebank penalty.

Three minutes later, Peter Bewsher broke to score and there was further St Anne’s woe when Kieran Glenn scored off a move which came straight from the restart, Brocklebank adding both conversion.

Saints full-back Jordan White then made a break for David Cookson to score near the posts, Kiel Lancashire converting.

Cookson went over again just before the break, Lancashire goaling, before the home side edged ahead when Lancashire converted his own try.

Within a minute of the restart, Danny Chrimes sailed home under the posts and though Egremont reduced the arrears through Glenn’s second, James McDonald adding the goal, Cookson was soon on the mark with his hat-trick try, David Harris following it up with one of his own.

Lancashire converted both and though the visitors refused to give up, scoring through Jack Murray, with 10 minutes left prop John Fox scored out wide with Lancashire kicking a seventh goal from as many attempts.

SADDLEWORTH Rangers outgunned Millom 34-6 at Shaw Hall Bank Road to remain clear of the chasing pack in division one.

Rangers took control after going behind to a James Newton penalty and ran home first-half tries through winger Fraser Coley, hooker Lee Charlesworth and veteran forward Emerson Jackman, with Michael Coates adding three conversions.

Millom pushed hard in the early stages of the second half and were rewarded through Newton’s try.

But with man-of-the-match winger Shaun Robinson a constant threat, Rangers killed off any lingering resistance with tries in the final 10 minutes from Tom Dransfield, Junior Brandford and Tom Kilgannon, Coates converting twice more.

WATERHEAD lost 32-0 at leaders Eccles in division two.

The home side, top of division two, scored six tries and had three more disallowed.

Paul Morgan (two) and Andrew Muscat crossed in the first half, with Muscat converting twice for a 16-0 lead.

Martin Judge, Ben Williamson and Mike O’Boyle added scores after the break, along with two Mike Davies goals.
