Street in surprise success

BOWLS: NEW Street sprang a surprise in the Ben Shaw’s Team Knock-Out at Chadderton Cot when they defeated recently-crowned ‘A’ Division champions Waterloo and Taunton.
Receiving 20 start, New Street had four winners, including Les Toth (21-10), Kevin Newbury (21-9) and Mark Prosser (21-12).
And although Alan Critchlow (21-9) and Charlie Roberts (21-6) hit back for Waterloo, they could not pull back the deficit and succumbed by 10 points.
In other first-round matches, Prestwich beat Nimble Nook, Royle overcame Cot, Lees/Springhead defeated last year’s beaten finalists Vixens and Failsworth beat Dogwood.
Reigning champions Springbank will take on Hopwood tonight (7pm).
North Chadderton and Stalybridge received byes into the quarter-finals.
