Inter-league title win for Oldham

TABLE TENNIS: OLDHAM clinched the Lancs & Cheshire Premier League inter-league table tennis title for the first time in 25 years with a 5-1 victory in the final match over main challengers Warrington.

Captain Darryl Meredith appeared in every match and was unbeaten throughout the campaign, his main support being supplied by Tristram Swan who only suffered one defeat.

In the last match, Paul Cicchelli was the other member of the team and turned in an unbeaten stint against Warrington.


DIVISION TWO leaders Coldhurst A went down to their first defeat of the season in the Oldham League, 7-3 against a strong Droylsden side for whom Jake Shaw won three and Miles Benjamin two.

Hollinwood F lost 9-1 to their C team, with Steve Collins and Nathan Buckley undefeated for the victors.

Werneth D and Unison A fought out a draw. Malc Pellowe (3) and Richard Hinchcliffe (2) gave Werneth the lead but Unison fought back with two from Allan Auxilly and a victory in the doubles.

Honeywell C maintained their promotion challenge with a 7-3 win over their D team. Peter Buckley was undefeated for the C team.

In the first division, Werneth A defeated BAE A 6-4 to take a slim lead in the battle for runners-up position this season. Darryl Meredith again lead the way for Werneth with a treble.

Rosehill had a bad week, losing 9–1 at home to Hollinwood A in a re-arranged match, Ian Quinn and Adam Rowbotham being undefeated for Hollinwood. They then lost 7-3 away to Hollinwood B with Dave Cheetham notching an excellent treble for Hollinwood.

Hyde YMCA battled hard against fellow strugglers Grotton but eventually went down 6-4. Grotton’s Shaun Ellis proved to be the main difference between the sides, winning all his games in straight sets.

Honeywell B whitewashed a two-man BAE B team 10-0 in their relegation battle, which leaves the Aerospace team in the bottom two. Steve Barber, Tom Ryan and Lee Davenport formed the victorious team.

Glodwick continued their march to the championship with a 9-1 defeat of Werneth B. Andy Jackson and Jeff Craighill both trebling for the league leaders.

Division three leaders Deaf Club A beat Unison D 10-0 to continue their title challenge, Pete Dawson, Ian Cockcroft and Dave Varney all winning three.

Unison C kept up the pressure with a 9-1 defeat of Uppermill B. There were maximums for Jim Bollard and Frank Sheldon.

Third-placed Unison B went down to a shock 9-1 defeat to Honeywell E, Ian Naylor and Ken Dunkerley both being undefeated for Honeywell.

Coldhurst B proved too strong for Grotton B and ran out 8-2 winners, Simon Walsh and Gary Keylock both trebling for Coldhurst.

Honeywell F proved too strong for St Saviour’s B team in the fourth division and ran out 8-2 winners with John Rutland being undefeated. However, there were two excellent wins for Jacob Reilly over Leo Cogger and Ron Holt.

Our Lady’s B team defeated Werneth G 8-2, with trebles for Matt Kelly and James Chappell.

The Our Lady’s A team also won, beating Coldhurst F 7-3. Pete Chappell won three and Deal Allman two, but Our Lady’s C team went down 9-1 to Werneth F for whom Joe Taylor and Colin Pellowe were both undefeated.

The Owls B team whitewashed an inexperienced Glodwick Academy 10-0.
