AMATEUR FOOTBALL: GOLDEN Buck reached their fifth Ashton Sunday League Vic Marsden Trophy final after getting the better of Warwick United at Coalshaw Green Park.
It was the perfect result for the Hollinwood-based outfit, who now go into Sunday’s North-West Champion of Champions’ Cup quarter-final against Stockport’s Cale Green in fine shape.
This semi-final tie was played in the right spirit and was a great advert for the league.
The scoreline may have been a little harsh on United, who played their part in a rousing encounter.
Buck secretary Steve McKenna said: “There were chances missed on both sides and a penalty that never was for Warwick.
“We felt we could have gone in at half-time with a more convincing lead and, although it was tight at times, we felt the result was the right one in the end.”
The ‘penalty’ incident that McKenna refers to came with Buck holding a slender 2-1 lead. Steve Savage upended Warwick’s Dave Loftus and everyone expected a spot-kick.
Everyone, that is, except the referee, who awarded a free-kick on the edge of the Buck penalty box which was ultimately fruitless.
Warwick secretary John Ham said: “It was quite a good game and I think Buck deserved to win, but I the scoreline flattered them.
“We should have had a penalty and that could have made things a lot different.”
Warwick started much the brighter of the two sides, coming close in the first minute when Loftus struck an upright.
But Rocky Siddall went straight to the other end to give Buck, who boast a 100-per-cent reocrd in the league, a second-minute lead.
It was 2-1 until justs before the hour mark when Scott Yates struck again for Buck, before Craig Wilkinson wrapped up victory with virtually the last kick of the game.
Sunday’s cup-tie represents the furthest that Buck have progressed in three attempts in this highly prestigious competition.
Buck manager Peter Hewitt will have a full strength squad available for the tie at Oak Pit, Hollins, (10.30am).
