Taylor suited by prime peg

ANGLING: CONRAD Taylor (Gilders) is a positive angler who is at his best when fishing for carp.

And he proved the point in the penultimate round of the Chadderton Mill AC winter league match fished on the club lodge.

Drawn on productive peg 14, Taylor obliterated the opposition with five carp taken on the tip and corn followed by a switch to 13-metre pole and maggot, netting him ide, roach and skimmers for a 36lb 2oz total.

Second was Steve Hodgeon (Rochdale), whose peg 13 produced 22lb of roach, skimmers and ide taken on long pole and maggot.

Paul Hill (Gilders) continued his good form in this series with a third-best 18lb of skimmers, ide, roach and a solitary carp. Organiser Alan Shaw (Tight Lines) was just a fish away as his waggler and maggot tempted 17lb 10oz of ide and roach.

FAILSWORTH plumber Ian Walvin (Gilders) has travelled all over the country to fish, but he has settled on Somerset as the place he really enjoys.

That is no surprise, really, as every time I speak to him he has landed a big catch!

This week he spoke to me from Cider Farm Fishery, where he proceeded to net 16 carp on 13-metre pole, sweetcorn and pellet to weigh in a fantastic 62lb 10oz.

That would have been good enough to win any other competition, but Cider Farm is hugely productive and he had to settle for third behind John Page’s 66lb 13oz and Mike Smith’s 64lb 6oz of carp.

THIS is the last weekend for anyone wanting to fish a river and my destination is the unpredictable Ribble at Preston.

Fingers crossed, it will be a cracking end-of-season session for me as I’m due one after several dry nets. I’ll let you know the outcome next week.

Venue Guide

Huddersfield Narrow Canal – Chub are being caught on the railway arches length at Uppermill. By all accounts, bread is the best bet. Day tickets on the bank cost £5.

Rochdale Canal – Some cat ice earlier this week, but that should have cleared by weekend. All lengths will produce fish, but pick your peg carefully as noted pegs will be the best. Use bread punch, pinkie and even caster for the odd better fish. Late afternoon is the best time.

Chadderton Mill Lodge – Pole and maggot is the best method.

Hollingworth Lake – Pike feeding with spinning and deadbaits. Day-ticket water.

Ogden Reservoir – The odd big perch and pike coming out. Day-ticket water.
