Honours even in top clash

Table tennis: WERNETH E and Deaf Club B drew their top-of-the-table clash in Division 4 of the Oldham Table Tennis League.

Matt Gartside and Mike Briggs both won two for the Deaf Club while Phil Coombe won two for Werneth. The result leaves Deaf Club four points clear of Werneth with three games left.

Third-placed Honeywell F had a resounding 10-0 win over the Deaf Club’s C team, Lee Rowbotham, John Rutland and Leo Cogger all unbeaten.

Werneth F beat Coldhurst E by 8-2 with maximums for Colin Pellowe and Andy Murry.

Owls B just about prevailed over the promising young St Saviour’s B team, eventually winning 6-4. There was a treble for Phil Tamworth for Owls, while Jacob Reilly won two for the Saints.

There was another close game at Our Lady’s where the B team beat Counthill 7-3 with three wins each for Matt Kelly and James Chappell.

Our Lady’s A went down 7-3 against Werneth G, who had Fred Pickles and Rob Ainsworth to thank for three wins each.

Glodwick Academy suffeered a couple of 10-0 defeats against Our Lady’s A and C teams.

Deaf Club A maintained their position at the top of Division 3 with a 9-1 win over bottom club Coldhurst C. There were trebles for Ian Cockcroft and Dave Varney.

Unison C kept up the pressure with a couple of wins. First they beat Grotton B 7-3, with Andrew Tarpey winning three, then they beat Coldhurst C 9-1 withTarpey and James Bollard both trebling.

Saddleworth B made Coldhurst B fight hard for their 6-4 win, Simon Walsh’s maximum for Coldhurst proving decisive.

A rejuvenated Unison D team just went down 6-4 at home to Honeywell E. There were two wins apiece for Terry Cooper and Alan Wynn for Honeywell.

St Saviours A had a tremendous 8–2 win away to Unison B with trebles for Brian Huskinson and Alex Leach.

Gilders had two wins, first a 6-4 over a two-man Owls B team followed by an 8-2 over Coldhurst D where Colin Ogden won three.

Uppermill B just beat Grotton B 6–4 thanks mainly to three good wins for Howard Meadham and two for Stuart Hanson.

In Division 2, champions-elect Coldhurst A continued their runwith a 7-3 win over Honeywell D. There were maximum’s for Coldhurst’s Paul Howarth and Simon King.

In the battle for the promotion place, both Honeywell C and Hollinwood C had 7-3 wins keeping them level on points. Honeywell beat Hyde YMCA thanks mainly to a treble from Brian Higgins, while Hollinwood C beat their E team thanks to two each from Steve Collins, Nathan Buckley and Mohammed Sajid. Paul King won three in defeat for the E team.

Droylsden beat Hollinwood F 7-3. Tim Greenald won three for Droylsden and George Marrow two for Hollinwood.

Pennine and Unison fought out a 5-5 draw. There were two wins each for Pennine’s Glen Chadwick and Steve Mather and a maximum for Unison’s Liaquat Ali.

There was a tremendous match at Werneth were the D team eventually went down 8-2 to Hollinwood D. Mike Pellowe won two for the home team lost 12-10 in the fifth to John Foster of Hollinwood who won three.

Hyde YMCA B and Uppermill A drew 5-5. Hyde’s Steve Hilton was unbeaten while Dave Grundy and Keith Moores won two each for Uppermill.

Second-placed Werneth A kept up their challenge for Division 1 runners-up spot with an excellent 7-3 win over Hollinwood A. Darryl Meredith won three for Werneth including a close success over Tristram Swann.

Champions Glodwick continued their perfect season with a 7-3 win over Honeywell A with Andy Jackson and Jeff Craighill both trebling.

Third-placedd BAE A won 7-3 against Hollinwood B after initially going 2-0 down. Tom Lang scored a treble for BAE while Dave Cheetham had an excellent win over Tony Bates for Hollinwood.

Honeywell B went down 6-4 at home to Werneth B. There were two wins each for the home team’s Barrie Royle and Tommy Ryan but they were matched by two each by Rob Carter and Gary Skinner for Werneth.

Bottom club Werneth C got their second win of the campaign with a 6-4 triumph over Rosehill. There were two wins each for Werneth’s Karen Hill and Paul Wilkinson and two each for Rosehill’s Phil Ashworth and Richard Sarre.
