ANGLING:
JOHN LEES (Gilders) showed the youngsters how it’s done by winning the final round of the Chadderton Mill AC winter league fished on the club water.
Drawn on peg six, 70-year-old John decided on a positive approach by fishing the tip and maggot and he netted two good carp and a few silvers for 21lb.
Second was the consistent Paul Hill (Gilders) with waggler and maggot fished shallow tempting 14lb 10oz of silvers.
There was a tie for third with Graham Mitchell (GTI Gilders) and Ivan Ditchfield (Tight Lines) both tipping a level 14lb on the scales. Overall league winner was Paul Hill followed by Ian Cox (Stalybridge Angling Supplies) and Alan Shaw (Tight Lines).
THE Todmorden AS Trophy match fished on Croft saw a good turnout and despite windy conditions they were rewarded with some decent sport. Winner was Steve Mills with a 13lb 4oz mixed bag taken on the pole and feeder.
Paul Balmforth was second with a level 9lb of carp and roach that were also tempted on pole and tip, followed by Wayne Richmond’s mixed bag weighing 8lb 12oz.
Note that keepnets are banned until May 11 on all Todmorden stillwaters with the exception of Croft as they have been stocked with 8ins to 12ins supa carp.
PETE HUMPHRIES (Gilders) is on fire at the moment and earned himself another win in the Brookside opens fished on Snake lake where with pole tactics he weighed in mostly carp for 53lb 8oz.
THERE was a tie for first place in the fifth round of the TRI-CAST Rochdale teams of four winter league match fished on the Hebden Bridge lengths of the Rochdale Canal.
Adam Jagger and Paul McMillan both weighed in with 5lb 3oz from the dead arm where they caught good stamp roach on caster to beat Roger Priestley into third with 3lb 11oz.
Teamwise it was TRI-CAST Rochdale Red who took the honours with 33 points, followed by Trabrucco Halifax on 26.
League leaders to date are Fox Match Red with 136 points.
CHADDERTON Mill AC members are reminded that subs are now due with the last membership rejoining night on Wednesday, March 24 at the Dog Inn (7 to 8pm). The gate lock will be changed and new keys issued.
A joining night for new members is set for Wednesday, March 31 at the Dog Inn (7-8pm).
OTHER commitments stopped me from getting to the Ribble, but a pleasure-fishing session on the Macclesfield Canal at Higher Poynton was well worth the visit.
It was a last-minute decision, so it was bread punch or bust for bait with skimmers and roach the target.
Fishing on the boats length, I caught steadily for a nice net of skimmers, hyrids and roach, with the biggest fish a 1lb skimmer.
The length is run by Northern Anglers but nobody came round for a ticket.
I’ll be spending some time on this canal this year as it is full of skimmers, roach and some massive perch that like casters and worms.
Venue Guide
Huddersfield Narrow Canal – Chub being caught on the arches length at Uppermill. Day tickets on the bank are £5.
Rochdale Canal – Bread punch, pinkie, red maggot and caster for skimmers, roach and perch maybe even the odd tench.
Chadderton Mill lodge – Solid with fish and any method will get you bites. Red maggot on tip, pole and waggler all producing.
Hollingworth Lake – Odd skimmers and perch with tip tactics best. Pike anglers catching. Day ticket water.
Ogden Reservoir – Just the odd big perch and pike falling to deadbaits and spinning. Day ticket water.
Woodside Farm - Fishing well with a roach every put-in on caster. The venue’s carp are starting to move as sweetcorn fished down the edge is catching plenty, as well small tench and skimmers.
