CROSS-COUNTRY:
OLDHAM and Royton Harriers had three representatives in the Greater Manchester team for the English Inter-Counties Cross-Country Championships at Cofton Park, Birmingham.
Adam Howard continued his fine form in the under-15 boys race, being up with the leaders from the start despite this being his first year in the age group which meant most of the other runners were a year older.
He ran on strongly to take fifth place in 15:10 as the Manchester team finished fifth overall.
In the under-13 boys race, Christopher Brown had a strong run in his first year representing the county team, finishing 80th in 11:16, while Jane Augsburger also turned in a solid effort in the under-17 ladies race, finishing 149th in 22:09.
On the roads, Pete Williams, who coaches the club’s runners, knocked more than three minutes off his over-50s best time to record 2hrs 28mins 41secs for the Trimpell 20-mile road race in Lancaster.
Pete, along with Dominic Kennerley, Darren Mannings and Jason Horsfield, are all training for this year’s London Marathon on April 25.
ROYTON Road Runners took the third team prize in the 14-mile Dentdale Run, the third of the club championship series, in the village of Dent in the Yorkshire Dales.
Stuart Carroll was rewarded for knocking a minute off his previous best to take 12th place overall in 1:30:25, and he combined with Bernie Cassidy and David Emanuel (1:38:44) for the team award.
There were also several near-misses for prizes (Dave Phillips fourth V60 in 1 hr 7 mins 37 secs, Debbie Shaw fourth FV45 in 1:57:41, Bernie Cassidy sixth V50 in 1:37:51 and Teresa Hollins seventh FV55 in 2:10:36).
