AMATEUR RUGBY: SHEVINGTON Sharks completed a double over St Anne’s ‘A’ by recording a 24-20 away win in North-West Counties League division one, but they were made to dig deep after letting a 16-point advantage slip.

Steve McHugh set in Luke Wallace at the corner to put Saints ahead and with three under-18s players in the home side, they held the visitors out for the game’s first quarter.

Then came two tries from Shevington’s Roy Rimmer, one from Scott Robinson and a Stevie Dunn goal, putting the Sharks 14-4 up at half-time.

Within two minutes of the interval, Neil Melling’s try and a Dunn conversion appeared to have settled the game.

But indiscipline allowed Sr Anne’s back in and two tries for hooker Jonathan Kelly and a Kevin Collins goal followed.

Saints were on level terms when McHugh won the race for a chip to the line, Collins added the goals, but a Paul Melling try in the corner secured the points for the visitors.

In division three, Saddleworth Rangers came unstuck 18-10 in a mid-table battle at Moss Bank Bulldogs, but Waterhead are still in the hunt for top honours in division five after a 28-6 defeat of Wigan Bulldogs.

They are second in the table, six points adrift of Hindley with two games in hand.

Rochdale Cobras, 18-0 winners over Westhoughton Lions, are on hot the heels of Waterhead.
