NON-LEAGUE FOOTBALL: MOSSLEY are preparing for the ultimate test in UniBond League division one north.
John Flanagan’s side, who suffered only second defeat in 12 games at Chorley in midweek, are away to high-flying Lancaster City tomorrow.
City boast a home record any team would be proud of — they have won 16 out of their 18 league games at the Giant Axe — and are also the league’s top scorers with 80 goals.
Despite Tuesday night’s 3-2 defeat, Mossley head north in confident mood. They had won six of their previous seven games before the Chorley setback to climb to ninth in the table.
CHADDERTON, bouyed by a 4–2 win at Cheadle Town in midweek, are on a revenge mission in division one of the Vodkat North-West Counties league tomorrow.
The Broadway outfit are at home to Ashton Town, sevens days after losing 2-1 in the reverse fixture.
Chadderton wasted a glut of chances in that game, and manager Paul Buckley is hoping that the confidence gained in front of goal from Wednesday’s win is carried forward to this weekend.
He said: “It could have been a rout in the first half against Cheadle — Leon Walters missed three one-on-ones and James Mooney hit the bar and post — but we still managed to score three times.
“The commitment was excellent and, although we had a few anxious moments in the second half when Cheadle came back at us, we got the points.
“Defender Dave Glynn and midfielder Donovan Greenidge returned from injury in the game, so that another plus.”
Striker Leon Melia is available again after serving a one-match ban.
Meanwhile, Chadderton’s reserve side are away to Colne in the divisional cup tomorrow.
WITH only one defender available, Oldham Boro boss Tony Mills faces a juggling act for tomorrow’s tough trip to fourth-placed Holker Old Boys.
“I think we’ll be drawing names out of a hat to play at the back,” joked Mills, who is without Damian Schofield (wedding), Lee Deakin (work commitments), Nick Murphy (calf injury) and Will Buckley (shin injury).
“It may mean Darren Scanlan having to play in defence. He’s big enough to do a job there.”
Boro, who are looking to bounce back after a 3-1 defeat at Irlam in midweek, are also without suspended midfielder Tom Hughes.
FC United of Manchester are set to move to the birthplace of Manchester United after announcing plans for a new ground in Newton Heath.
The Unibond Premier League club, formed by United fans angered by the controversial Glazer takeover in 2005, have drawn up plans for a 5,000–capacity stadium at the Ten Acres Lane sports centre.
The scheme has the backing of Manchester City Council, which owns the site, and will now be put to local residents and community groups.
The club, currently playing at Bury’s Gigg Lane ground, must also secure backing for the £3.5 million project.
