Non-league Football:: MOSSLEY felt hard done by after they were beaten 2-1 at top-of-the-table Lancaster City in UniBond League division one north.

The Lilywhites gave as good as they got and dominated for long periods at the Giant Axe, but came away empty-handed after conceding a controversial late goal.

Matty Russell and Jordan Goodeve were excellent in midfield and only some last-ditch defending denied Mossley.

The Lancaster goal lived a charmed life and it was against the run of play that the hosts, who had won 16 of their previous 18 league games at home, went in front courtesy of Adam Farrell’s 32nd minute effort.

Mossley continued to pose more of a threat in the second period — Lancaster relied on long balls towards their loan front man — but they had to wait until five minutes from time to score a deserved equaliser, substitute Mike Fish firing home through a crowd of players.

But hopes of a point were dashed with just over a minute left on the clock. Nathan Neequaye seemed to be fouled as he tried to turn, but the referee waved play on and, from the breakaway, Farrell beat ’keeper Peter Collinge with a low drive from 25 yards.

PAUL Buckley is set to shuffle the pack for Chadderton’s Vodkat North-West Counties League division one clash at home to high-flying Stone Dominoes tonight (kick-off 7.45pm).

Defenders John Rogers and Danny Shaw, plus midfield man Sean Nolan, are poised to start after Saturday’s disappointing 2-0 defeat by Ashton Town.

The Broadway manager described the first-half display as “one of the worst he had ever seen”, with a comedy of errors leading to Stephen Edwards’ eighth minute. A header from Greg Harrison doubled the lead before the interval.

Chadderton were better after the break, but James Curley wasted a great chance to reduce the deficit when he saw his penalty saved, while Adam Edwards missed two one-on-ones with the Town ’keeper.

Boro players stranded after bus breaks down

OLDHAM Boro’s match at Holker Old Boys was postponed in Vodkat North-West Counties League division one after a bus carrying nine of the players broke down on the M6.

Six members of the squad and five backroom staff, who travelled separately, got to the Rakesmoor Lane ground in Barrow-in-Furness but the remainder, plus manager Tony Mills, were stuck for four-and-half hours outside of Lancaster.

Mills said: “A wire to the fuel pump was severed, so we couldn’t go anywhere. We had to wait for the RAC to come out and it was 7.20pm by the time we got home.”

FA rules state that a team must have at least seven players on the pitch for a match to take place.
