Glodwick’s joy at title repeat

TABLE TENNIS:

GLODWICK retained their division one title in the Oldham League with a 7-3 win over BAE ‘A’, who were their nearest challengers.

Andy Jackson and Mark Ramsbottom recorded hat-tricks for Glodwick, while Tom Lang and Tony Smith won one apiece for BAE.

The two teams battling to stay out of the second relegation place both lost.

BAE ‘B’ were swept aside 9-1 by Werneth ‘A’, for whom Darryl and Stuart Meredith were unbeaten. Mick Hill supplied BAE’s solitary point.

Fellow strugglers Hyde YMCA lost 8-2 against Werneth ‘B’.

Gary Skinner and Amanda Winskill posted maximums for Werneth, while Terry Taylor and Ken Ward won one apiece for Hyde.

Hollinwood ‘A’ produced the performance of the week in the top flight. The combination of Tristran Swan, Ian Quinn and George Jones triumphed 10-0 over their ‘B’ team, although four of the games did require a deciding set.

Honeywell ‘A’ won 8-2 against basement boys Werneth ‘C’. Dave Buckley and Simon Hardwick were unbeaten for Honeywell.

Shaun Ellis registered three wins for Grotton ‘A’ against Saddleworth, but they were his team’s only points in a 7-3 defeat.

In division two, Honeywell ‘D’ condemned Hollinwood ‘F’ to relegation with a 9-1 defeat.

Ian Naylor and Allan Marston were both undefeated for Honeywell, with Paul Rourhe supplying Hollinwood’s only win.

Uppermill ‘A’ are looking to go up after a 7-3 defeat of Hollinwood ‘D’. Mark Simpson won three for Uppermill.

Hollinwood ‘E’ beat Werneth ‘D’ 7-3 thanks to an excellent treble from junior Paul King.

The division three title is up for grabs.

Leaders Deaf Club ‘A’, including a treble from Pete Dawson, overcame Honeywell ‘E’ 7-3.

Unison ‘C’, featuring trebles from Andrew Tarpey and Jim Bollard, moved to within a point of the Deaf Club with a 9-1 defeat of Saddleworth ‘B’.

Oldham Owls ‘A’ condemned Unison ‘D’ to relegation with a comprehensive 9-1 win.

There were three wins each for Paul Woodward and Richard Tamworth for the Owls.

Bottom-of-the-table Coldhurst ‘D’ lost 7-3 to Uppermill ‘B’, for whom Stuart Hanson and Howard Meadham notched trebles.

Third-placed Coldhurst ‘B’ fielded Simon Walsh and Simon King from their ‘A’ team, and both won three against Unison ‘B’ in a 9-1 triumph.

St Saviour’s ‘A’ will be a team to be reckoned with next season.

They defeated Gilders 7-3, with a treble for Brian Huskinson and doubles for Alex Reilly and Alex Leach.

In division four, title contenders Werneth ‘E’ moved to within a point of the lead with a 9-1 defeat of Coldhurst ‘E’. Joe Taylor and Darren Mitzi won three for Werneth.

Leaders Deaf Club ‘B’ enjoyed a 6-4 win over third-placed Honeywell ‘F’. Matt Gartside won a crucial three for Deaf.

St Saviour’s ‘B’ beat Our Lady’s ‘A’ 7-3 thanks to a treble from Mark Dalton and two each from Jacob Reilly and Tom Dalton.

The Our Lady’s ‘B’ team of Matt Kelly, James Chappell and Callum Allman, whitewashed Deaf Club ‘C’ 10-0.

Werneth ‘G’ beat Our Lady’s ‘C’ 7-3, which included a treble for Werneth’s Rob Ainsworth.

A strong Owls ‘B’ team swept aside Counthill 9-1. Paul Woodward and Phil Tamworth won three for Owls.

And there were three wins each for Colin Pellowe and David Jefferson as Werneth ‘F’ beat an enthusiastic Glodwick Academy 9-1.
