DAVE Melling’s sterling service as professional at Crompton and Royton has been acknowledged with a superb turn-out for a team event at the club.
A shotgun start was employed for the four-man competition which raised a magnificent £2,530.
It was presented to Dave, who is retiring after 38 years as club professional.
There were some superb prizes on offer, the best being a round of golf for four at the superb Hillside course in Southport.
That was won by Chris King, Landy Wild, Steve Bower and Mick Neil, who combined to rack up a winning total of 86 points.
Second, winning a round for four at Mere, were Simon Higgins, Danny Heap, Dion Norbury and Alex Givvons (85 points).
A round for four at Hesketh was won by third-placed Peter Wright, Ray Griffiths, Paul Crowshaw and Dave Lord, who scored 81 points, while Ormskirk GC will the venue for fourth-placed Gary Melling – Dave’s son – Andy Allen, Dean Osborne and Liam Dwayre (76 points).
Fifth-placed Mick Flint, Jordan Flint, Robert Calow and Chris Calow won a round at Worsley Marriott after finishing fifth on 75 points.
They won a card play-off against sixth-placed Steven Moores, Dave Briddon, Chris Clark and Peter Broadley, whose efforts earned them a round for four at North Manchester.
Family victory
GRANDFATHER and grandson Derek and Lee Conway won Crompton and Royton’s four-ball better-ball Stableford with 43 points, beating runners-up Keith Wood and Alex Givvons and third-placed Dion Norbury and Danny Heap in a card play-off.
CLUBS who wish to have competition results published in Wednesday’s Chronicle are reminded that the deadline for acceptance is noon on Tuesdays.

A PRE-SEASON meeting of the Oldham and District Rabbits League will be held at Oldham Golf Club next Wednesday (7.30pm).
Interested parties must supply a list of players, with handicaps, for the 2010 season and each must have a handicap of 15.5 or over to be eligible.
The maximum handicap is 22, but players with a handicap above that mark can play off 22.
Players whose handicaps increase to 15.5 in 2010 can sign on during the season and will become eligible to play for their chosen team seven days after registration.
Any registered player whose handicap falls below 15.5 after April 1, 2010, will be able to play but must compete off his new handicap.
Team entry fee of £30 should be paid to Richard Manniex at next week’s meeting.
