Buckley’s blast has desired effect

NON-LEAGUE FOOTBALL: PAUL Buckley’s half-time dressing down paid dividends as Chadderton brushed aside AFC Blackpool 4-1 in division one of the Vodkat North-West Counties League.

Unhappy at the way his side performed in the opening 45 minutes — Blackpool’s Ben Waddington cancelled James Curley’s third-minute effort for the visitors — the Broadway boss issued his second-half instructions on the pitch.

And the open-air team talk did the trick as Chadderton dominated the second half to seal a third success on the trot.

Adam Edwards, Bank Holiday Monday’s hat-trick hero against neighbours Oldham Boro, was fouled on the edge of the penalty area, and up stepped James Mooney to fire home the free-kick in the 56th minute.

Curley shot the wrong side of a post before Danny Shaw added Chadderton’s third two minutes from time. Switched from the centre of defence to the right-hand side of midfield, he converted a cross from Gary Edwards, who had replaced brother Adam in attack.

Curley eventually got his second and Chadderton’s fourth of the game at the death, the striker finding the top corner from 25 yards.

Chadderton remain 10th in the table, while OLDHAM BORO are still third from bottom after they were beaten 2-0 by high-flying Barnoldswick Town.

In a nondescript match, the Whitebank Stadium outfit went behind in the 18th minute, although Boro felt Joe Shelmerdine had used his hand to knock the ball out of ’keeper Danny Pearson’s grasp before putting his side in front.

A mix-up in defence led to Town’s second goal just after the half-hour mark, and from that point there was no way back for Boro, whose cause wasn’t helped by an injury to Ryan Baldwin. The striker pulled up with a back spasm which meant Boro, who had used all their substitutes, had to play the last 30 minutes with 10 men.

A clash which featured little in the way of goalmouth action, the home side’s best chances fell to Darren Scanlan, who shot wide after breaking clear, and Damian Schofield, who saw his point-blank header saved by the ’keeper.

MATTY Kay’s second-half penalty kept up Mossley’s pursuit of a play-off place in UniBond League division one north.

The midfielder struck with 20 minutes to go to clinch a 1-0 win over Radcliffe Borough at Seel Park.

The result lifted the Lilywhites to seventh in the table, seven points behind Curzon Ashton, who are in the last play-off spot.
