GOLF:

ANDY Long and Lee Rowbotham, with 44 points, teamed up to win the captain’s day invitation four-ball better-ball Stableford event at SADDLEWORTH.

They finished in front of Mike Shaw and Jamie Hughes (43), with Graham Hall and Lee Blainey (42) in third place after a card play-off.

The Huddersfield and Halifax four-ball better-ball Stableford qualifier went to Dave Pullen and Dave McNeil with 44 points.

Ben Simpson and Mark Anderson-Wild (43) were the runners-up, on a card play-off from Nick Marner and Tad Knebel.


ROY Hornybrook and Matthew Kershaw scored 45 points to win Crompton and Royton’s four-ball better-ball Stableford.

Second were Kris Sutcliffe and Jason Webster (44), while grandfather and grandson Derek and Lee Conway were third with 43 points.


Chance to get involved

FREE coaching and taster sessions are taking place at Crompton and Royton Golf Club.

They are open to beginners and non-members and provide an ideal introduction to golf.

The initiative is part of the English Golf Union (EGU) and English Women’s Golf Association (EWGA) club coaching grant scheme, which encourages promotion of the sport and recruitment at local level.

Force is with gail

GAIL Rowbotham started the season brightly at Werneth with wins in two of the club’s two-ball Stablefords.

She scored 31 points in the first to beat Joan Swindells (30), who won the first division sweep. Second-division honours went to Dee Whittingham (27) from Sylvia Grant (25).

Gail followed up with 34 points in the next event, with first-division honours going to Fiona Dooley (33) from Lisa Hall (29). In the second division, Christine Moon (30) pipped Lily Bevins (29)
