AMATEUR RUGBY LEAGUE:

HIGGINSHAW strengthened their promotion push with a stunning display of attacking rugby, running in eight tries in the Kukri North West Counties League division four in midweek to beat Cadishead 46-6.

Cadishead took the lead after 10 minutes with a penalty, but Higginshaw hit back when winger Steve Perry burst the line to put Adam Horabin in for his first try, Ryan O’Donnell adding the conversion.

O’Donnell went on to convert six more, earning a suerb seven out of eight ratio.

Cadishead responded with a try to make it 6-6. But Michael Cadd took on the defence from 30 yards out, scoring under the posts as Higginshaw led 12-6 at the break.

After the restart, Paul Turner made 35 yards before sending in Horabin for his second try.

Kris Richards and Scott Foote then sent in winger Steve Perry and the conversion made it 24-6.

The outcome was beyond doubt when Michael Cadd beat several defenders, dummied the full-back and sent in fellow prop Dane Armstrong who popped up on the wing.

A five-man move involving Carl Fields, Sean Stubbs and Mathew Corbally, ended when with a Chris Tomlin inside ball to Steve Perry, who went in for his second try after 60 minutes.

David Sweeney then burst the first line of defence, with the supporting Michael Cadd making ground before bringing in Michael Jewitt who returned the ball to Cadd to score his 16th try of the season.

O’Donnell capped his fine performance with a kick to the corner which saw Sean Stubbs use his pace to beat the defenders to the touchdown.

Higginshaw had powered to a 20-0 victory against promotion rivals Bamber Bridge on Saturday. Scott Foote, Jonathan Fullalove, Adam Horabin and Michael Cadd scored the tries, with Fullalove adding two goals.

ST Anne’s ‘A’ went down 32-18 away at Haydock in the Kukri North West Counties League division one.

Despite having the advantage of a large penalty count, Saints were denied four tries in the first half.

Haydock took the lead and posted 22 unanswered points before Ryan Harley crossed for the visitors, when Shaft added a second and both efforts goaled by Steve McHugh.

Saints were back in it and were camped on their opponents’ line when Haydock intercepted and put the game beyond reach.

The Arrowsmith twins were involved in Saints’ last score when Michael made the running to put Mark in under the posts, with McHugh adding the goal.

IN their penultimate game of the season, Waterhead were beaten 38-14 away to Bolton Mets at the weekend, in the Kukri North West Counties League division five.
