Trophy success is Taylor made

FATHER and son David and Jordan Taylor ruled the roost in a competition at SADDLEWORTH.

They broke their duck as a partnership by lifting the Cyril Taylor Trophy.

David and Jordan, from Uppermill, recorded 74-10-64 in the pairs greensome format to come out on top — and they didn’t know they had won until the Oldham Evening Chronicle got in touch.

“We knew we were there or thereabouts, but we left before the final result was announced,” said 52-year-old David, who is a 12-handicapper to Jordan’s eight

“Our games complement each other. Jordan is a long hitter, while I’m probably a bit steadier on the greens.”

Victory wasn’t plain sailing for the Taylors. They had a triple bogey on the ninth and a double bogey on the 17th.

But despite those two hiccups, they still finished clear of runners-up Dean Jagger and Steve Baron (76-10-66), with Stuart Potts and Ian Taylor (78-11.5-66-5) in third place.

And considering neither had played a lot of golf lately, it was a great effort.

It was only Jordan’s second game at Saddleworth since October — the 22-year-old spent the winter ski guiding in France — while David was treading the fairways for the first at the course for more than five months.

BROOKDALE

JOHN Uren had a day to remember in Brookdale’s medal for the Ted Clinch Memorial Trophy when he holed in one at the 190-yards par three 11th.

But despite his ace, Uren was unable to bridge the gap on the leaders and it was Mickey Coleman, with a net 62, who took first prize.

WERNETH

ALAN McMunn, with a score of 77-12-65, won the monthly medal on a card play-off at Werneth.

The runner-up was Terry Melia (77-12-65).

Tom Scott (82-18-64) won the division two prize, from Mick Wallace (83-16-67).

OLDHAM

RICKARDO Sweet shot 70-6-64 to win the Spring Bowl medal at Oldham.

Mike MacCafferty (78-130-65) was second, ahead of John Bramhall (73-7-66).

Steve Rae and Terry Garrett scored 43 Stableford points to win a four-ball, better-ball competition.

Alan Chadwick and Steve Smith (42 pts) were second, on the card from Sam Gilbey and John Wheaton.
