AMATEUR FOOTBALL: AVRO have narrowed the gap on leaders Wythenshawe Amateurs in the Bridgewater Office Supplies Manchester League premier division.

While Wythenshawe could only manage a 1-1 draw with bottom side Rochdale Sacred Heart, Avro recorded a 2-0 victory at Royton Town, who were also beaten 2-1 by Atherton Town in midweek.

And Avro’s 3-3 draw with Heys turned out to be a point gained on Tuesday, as the stuttering leaders lost 3-0 at Stockport Georgians.

It leaves them just three points off the top, with two games in hand.

Springhead battled to a 2-2 draw at Hindsford and followed it up with a thrilling 4-3 home victory at the expense of Hollinwood.

Diggle take derby spoils

DIGGLE bagged the bragging rights as they beat closest rivals Uppermill 2-0 in the Huddersfield and District League division one.

The points moved them up to second place in the table.

Diggle had to wait until the 40th minute before they took the lead. Keiron Mayall pounced on a loose ball in the area following a corner.

They doubled their lead shortly after the break when Mayall added his second of the match with a splendid solo effort from long range.

Diggle had chances to add to their lead but found goalkeeper Alan Scorer in good form.

Heyside completed their division four programme with a 4-1 win over eight-man Cartworth Moor.

With only four first team players left from the previous week, Heyside conceded their reserve fixture to field a virtual second string side.

The first half was a scrappy affair and it was 1-1 at the break, but Heyside made their numerical advantage count in the second period.

Nick Campbell scored a hat-trick and Jake Warbuton got the other goal for Heyside.

Diggle seconds beat Newsome reserves 2-1 in the FA Challenge Junior Cup semi-final.

They raced into a two-goal lead and never looked back from there. Newsome grabbed a last minute consolation, but it was not enough to stop the second string’s relentless challenge for success.

It means they now have two cup final appearances to look forward to, and, hopefully, a fourth consecutive league title as they sit on top of reserve division one.

Results-

Division one: Diggle 2, Uppermill 0.

Division four: Heyside 4, Cartworth Moor 1.

FA Junior Cup semi-final: Diggle seconds 2, Newsome reserves 1.

United edge into the final

WARWICK United overcame leaders Golden Buck to reach the final of the Ashton Sunday League premier division cup, after a dramatic penalty shoot out.

The sides were locked at 3-3 after extra time, Buck’s goals coming from Yates, Savage and Brooks, but Falmer (two) and Whitehurst ensured the game went to penalties.

Warwick edged it by four penalties to three. They will now face Dog and Partridge in the final on Wednesday at Curzon Ashton (kick-off 7pm).

Home Guard’s Sam Cooke bagged an 85th minute winner to beat Moston Labour Club 3-2.

Mark Baines hit two goals for Home Guard and a double from Jordan Walker looked like rescuing Moston until Cooke pounced.

Home heartache

ASHTON United Ladies lost 4-2 at home to Halton Ladies in the Cheshire and Manchester Women’s League. Aimee Smith and Paige Riley were on target for the hosts.
