Heyside off to a flying start

CRICKET: HEYSIDE made a flying start to the 2010 Armstrongs Office Furniture Saddleworth and District Cricket League season.

In the only game to be played to a finish because of rain, Nicky Campbell’s side put 10-man Hollinwood in their place at Little Hey Street.

Minus the experience of professional Aamir Bashir, all-rounder Shahzad Sadaqat and spinner Rashid Khan — all three were stuck in Pakistan following the fall-out from the Icelandic volcano crisis — the visitors from Lime Lane went from 109 for one to 110 for five before eventually succumbing to 154 all out. Zeeshan Ahmed compiled 49.

Heyside reached their target for the loss of three wickets, with new signing John Selby unbeaten on 78.

Uppermill and reigning champions Bamford Fieldhouse were frustrated by rain at Leafields — Uppermill had reached 60 for one from 13 overs when the two captains shook hands in the middle — while the remaining four matches ended in draws after weather interruptions.

Mike Jones was the first player to make a century this season, smashing 102 not out for Stayley against Glodwick, for whom pro Imran Aslam replied with 103. Stayley’s Steve Bird also struck 66 in the Millbrook contest.

New paid man Ryan Senior hit the ground running for Shaw. The spinner took seven for 69 to help restrict Moorside to 159 all out. Richard Baines made 54. Shaw were 75 for six in reply when time was called.

And Michael Schofield made 86 for Austerlands, who registered 206 at Greenfield. The home side 25 without loss when play was halted.
