Classy Matt is Oldham’s prize guy

Date published: 05 May 2010

MATT Radcliffe was the emphatic first-round victor of OLDHAM’S President’s Prize competition.

He registered 70-10-60 to finish an impressive six shots clear of prolific winner Alan Squires, who returned 66-0-66.

John Waterhouse had to settle for third place on the card with 85-19-66.

Radcliffe’s goal this year is to reduce his handicap to four in order to start a PGA course at Oldham.

Meanwhile, Ken Lunn and Phil Docherty combined to land a four-ball better-ball medal with a score of 57.

Roger Kenney and Harold McGuinness were the runners-up on 60 after a card play-off from David Bailey and Roger Stansfield.

Cooksey golf day to raise funds for cancer research

A GOLF day is to be held to raise money for Factor 50, the Oldham-based research fund for the Christie centre in Manchester.

The aim is to provide funds for a promising clinical trial treatment for malignant melanoma — the illness which robbed the world of former Athletic and Rochdale player Ernie Cooksey.

Rochdale Supporters Trust began fundraising for Factor 50 last year because of Ernie, with the blessing of his family.

And from there, plans have been put in action to hold the inaugural Ernie Cooksey Memorial Golf Day at Manchester Golf Club, Hopwood, on Friday, July 2.

The Stableford competition costs £260 per team of four. Further details can be obtained by calling Andy Worthington on 07977 921085 or by emailing andyworthington.factor50@googlemail.com

The price includes lunch and a dinner which is followed by a sporting memorabilia auction and the chance to watch a World Cup quarter-final on a big screen in the function suite.
