Openers post new best

CRICKET:

Woodhouses have entered the JW Lees Lancashire County League record books.

Second-team openers Phil Sutcliffe (156) and ’keeper Nick Doyle (126) shared in an unbroken stand of 311 against Denton, a new best for the first wicket in division two.

Denton lost all their wickets for 122, Doug Sloan claiming four for 32.

A day earlier Woodhouses saw off the challenge of Thornham, who ended on 161 for nine. John Thorpe took five for 54.

In reply Doyle mustered an undefeated 100 and Steve Clarke 60 not out to help their side to 162 for one.

Meanwhile, teenager Nick Hardman bowled over his opponents as he found some scintillating form for the first team on a busy weekend of division one action.

The 18-year-old took a total of 10 wickets and also put in a good shift with the bat.

In the first game, Thornham were dismissed for 125, with Hardman claiming five for 18.

Woodhouses cruised to 126 for one, with new arrival Josh Tolley scoring 65 not out and Jimmy Clarke finishing on 51 not out.

The following day saw all of Denton’s wickets go for 119, Hardman taking five for 11 this time.

Skipper Mike Cassidy made 54 not out and Hardman 20 not out to help Woodhouses to 123 for four.


DOUBLE BLOW

FAILSWORTH Macedonia recorded 183 for nine in an exciting clash in division one of the Site Electrical North Manchester League.

But opponents Blackley made one more run for the same amount of wickets.

And Failsworth, along with Springhead, both exited the Calverley Cup.
