Amended result costly for Werneth

CRICKET: WERNETH are two points worse off after a CLL ruling to award Radcliffe victory instead of a draw during their visit to the Coppice last month.

Intially, the match was declared a draw and both sides awarded two points when Werneth’s innings closed on 103 for eight in reply to Radcliffe’s 203.

The rain-affected fixture featured a revised Werneth target of 145 from 31 overs, but only 30 were bowled by the 8.15pm cut-off time.

League secretary Alan Wright said: “The umpires ruled the match to be a draw, but they interpreted the rules wrong.

“In this instance, it went down to net run rate.

“As a result of this incident, a statement has been issued to all umpires explaining the rule.”

CROMPTON and Royton were in winning form on week two of their CLL under-18 matches.

Crompton scored 118 for eight in reply to Walsden’s 117 for five, while Matthew Smith and Liam Mason – who have broken into the Royton first team - made 50 apiece as the Paddock side breezed past Werneth’s total of 100.

Oldham, who made 63 for nine, lost to Heywood (64 for one).

Other scores: Unsworth 168-7 v Middleton, rain, match drawn; Clifton 186, Rochdale 187-4.

All four local teams lost on week three, when the scores were:

Rochdale 241 - 5 (Shahid Butt 50, Ben Duffy 50), Werneth conceded (Mark Helliwell 50); Crompton 87, Middleton 170 (Matthew Lee 50); Royton 83 (Curtis Maguire 5-19), Heywood 211-5 (Tom Blundell 50); Walsden 227 - 5 (Ryan Howley 50), Oldham 114; Unsworth 137-6, Clifton 95-7.

LITTLEBOROUGH have withdrawn from the competition.
