Turner has a day to remember

ATHLETICS: MELANIE Turner, of Oldham and Royton Harriers, produced a fine day’s work in the first match of the North of England Track and Field League at Witton Park, Blackburn.

She claimed top honours in the women’s 100 metres in 13.5 seconds and was runner-up in the 400m in 61.3s.

Turner also threw the hammer to 23.63m for second place, the discus to 16.68m and the javelin to 17.40m.

Sharon Harper recorded 21.70m in the hammer, 19.92m in the discus, 13.08m in the javelin and 7.99m in the shot put, where Melanie Lee posted 6.33m.

In the men’s events, Lee Broadbent was second in the 100m in 12.1s, and was followed by Mark Whittenbury (12.2s).

Bradley Szacas won the 200m ‘B’ race in 24.4s, while Mark Whittenbury finished in 25.9s. Szacas also won the ‘A’ 400m in 51.8s, with Broadbent crossing the line in 57.2s.

In the 800m, Mike Mannings was the runner-up in two minutes 07.0 seconds.

He also finished second in the 1500m in 4:35.5, but won the 5000m ‘B’ race in 18:31.7.

Trevor Davies was second in the 5000m ‘A’ race in a time of 16:56.9.

Colin Allen had two reasons to celebrate. He was successful in the men’s hammer with a throw of 25.19m and the ‘B’ discus (27.31m). He was also third in the ‘B’ shot put with 9.19m.

Mike Rigby won the ‘B’ hammer with 24.34m and the shot put in 11.02m. He also claimed second place in the discus with an effort of 31.97m.

Steve Williams was fourth in the javelin (24.74m).

There was joy for the Oldham men’s team in the 4x100m relay, with Whittenbury, Szacas, Mannings and Broadbent teaming up to win in 48.6s. The same foursome came home fourth in the 4x400m relay in 3:47.6.

On the roads, Mike Mannings ran superbly to lead home a team of 10 Harriers in the Littleborough 5k event.

He was fifth in 16:59, while Dominic Kennerley set a new personal best time in 21st place of 19:47.

Darren Mannings also posted a new pb of 20:44, Derek Atherton registered 21:27, Pete Williams 21:36, Sandrine Fraisse 21:58 and Grace Atherton 25:08.

Maggie Elliott also ran her fastest 5k race in 25:21, ahead of Natalie Mannings (25:28) and Paula Lashley, who took part in her first race over this course in 26:23.

In The BUPA Great Manchester 10k, Dominic Kennerley crossed the line in 40:15, and was followed home by Karl Smith (42:51), Elliott (50:14), Paula Lashley (50:57) and Tony Morrison (53:06), who running his first 10k.

Christopher Brown was an excellent fourth in the junior race in 8:04.
