CRICKET: AGONY turned to ecstasy for Lee Warburton in the Saddleworth and District Cricket League’s Tanner Cup on Saturday.
The Moorside bowler laid prone on the floor for several minutes after banging his right knee while spilling a diving catch, but he picked himself, dusted himself down and went on to produce a match-winning display in the first-round tie at home to Shaw.
Warburton finished with four for 37 from nine overs and, for good measure, it was his throw which ended Shaw’s resistance 15 runs shy of their target with five balls remaining.
Despite baking-hot temperatures, it was hard work for batsmen on a sluggish wicket at Turf Pit Lane.
Moorside’s score of 184 for five appeared 20 runs short of their minimum requirement when they set out to bat. They were not helped by an inability to run quick singles or turn ones into twos.
Danny Anchor, returning to the club where he played as a junior before stints at Saddleworth, Micklehurst and Marsden, compiled 49, his best knock of the season so far.
He forged a first-wicket stand of 70 with Richard Baines, before the latter fell to Ryan Senior, one of three wickets for 32 runs for Shaw’s paid man.
Anchor was bowled trying to sweep Senior, while professional JP Lee fell shortly after for 12.
Lloyd Kingston and Kashif Khan attempted to up the tempo until both departed in consecutive balls.
Kingston fell to a neat take behind the stumps by captain Steve Whiston, while Khan looked on in disbelief after Gareth Harrop juggled and then held a rapier-like shot on the boundary edge.
The change of gear finally came through Miles Barnes and Chris Entwistle (15 not out), the pair adding 25 in the last 12 balls.
Barnes hit Andre Milan for a four and six in the penultimate over to finish unbeaten on 22.
Like Moorside, Shaw got off to a solid enough start.
Francis Sutherland – playing against his former club – and Whiston had added 46 when the former was caught by Aaron Barnes off his own brother, Miles, for 23.
Whiston and Milan departed to Glen McFadyean in quick succession – the medium-pacer ended up with three for 21 from seven overs – but at 109 for three with 17 overs to go, Shaw were in the driving seat, albeit not in full control.
The discomfort felt after the tumble meant Warburton was kept away from the bowling attack until the second half of the innings, but he was no less effective when called upon.
HOPE
Bowling in tandem with Anchor, the seamer used his nous to rip through Shaw’s middle order.
Anchor started the ball rolling when he removed Harrop for 36, before Warburton weighed in with the wickets of Senior (19), Mike Small (10) and Mark Chadwick (five) to leave Shaw on 124 for seven.
Andy Young and Shaun Dean gave the visitors hope with a stand of 41, but the overs were running out fast and when Kingston held a skier to dismiss Young for 13, Moorside were almost home.
It was then left to Warburton to remove Richard Doherty and run out Drew Fullalove to complete victory.
In other first-round action, Roelof Hugo’s superb 132 was in vain as Heyside slipped to a two-wicket defeat against Greenfield.
Adam Hayes struck 63 and Chris Gill made 59 as the lads from Ladhill Lane chased down 241 to win.
Martin Smith claimed five for 36 for Bamford Fieldhouse, the holders, as they swept aside Glodwick by nine wickets.
Aamir Bashir, in his first game of the season for Hollinwood, scored 40 and took three for 35 in a 66-run victory over Friarmere, while Nathan Boote hit 87 and James Baron picked up four for 36 as Uppermill overcame Austerlands by 33 runs.
