Ace George is a super stand-in for Stamford

GOLF: GEORGE Mackey was originally picked as a reserve for Stamford’s Oldham and District Rabbits League fixture against high-fliers Houldsworth.

But he was a late inclusion in the team and made the most of his unexpected place by holing in one at Stamford’s 16th hole to claim five Stableford points.

George’s ace was not enough to prevent Stamford from losing 5-3 to Houldsworth, who extended their lead at the top to seven points.

Oldham, meanwhile, gained valuable away points in a 10-6 defeat at Dukinfield in the first of their cup matches.

Fairfield, who are languishing at the bottom of the league table, beat third-placed Brookdale 9-7 in the same competition.

Michele joins a successful team

MANCHESTER Golf Club have secured the services of Michele Thomson, the 2008 Scottish amateur champion and member of the British Curtis Cup team in the same year.

Michele, from the town of Ellon, represented Scotland on numerous occasions during an impressive amateur career.

She turned professional after the Curtis Cup, but decided to take a break from playing professional golf following a personal bereavement.

Manchester professional Brian Connor, father of rising star Rachel, said: “As a family we have known Michele for a number of years.

“She is great fun, very approachable, hardworking and a fantastic golfer. We are very proud to have Michele on board.

“And we know that she will enhance the staff which we already have in place.

“Her remit is to improve the services that we offer to junior players at Manchester Golf Club and in the surrounding area.

“She will also be working with our House of Golf professional Scott Connor in order to provide women’s group coaching and some mixed classes as well.”
