GOLF:
WERNETH are through to the last 16 of the Archie Preston mixed foursomes after a 5-2 home win over Chorlton-cum-Hardy.
Captain Derek Ashford led the way when he and Pat Grant claimed a 7&5 success.
And there were more successes through Lee Rowbotham and Brenda Martin (6&5) and Pete and Marilyn Griffin (4&3) before final green wins for Adam Rowbotham and Sheila Whittingham (1up) and John Yemm and Sheila Waterhouse (1up) clinched victory.
There is a three-way tie after round one of the SADDLEWORTH’S Committee Cup, one of the club’s major competitions.
Jeff Howarth (78-8-70), John Millward (87-17-70) and David George (80-10-70) lead the way going into the second round, which takes place this weekend.

On the mark
MARK Chadwick, president of the CLL Golf Society, teamed up with John Kenrick to score 46 points and win his own prize at Walmersley Golf Club.
The President’s Day attracted a decent entry and second place went to Mike Arnold and Anthony Flanagan (42 points), on the card from Warren and Glenn Duckworth.
