CRICKET: WHO needs Loots Bosman?
The explosive South African batsman was all set to be Greenfield’s deputy professional for their Tanner Cup, second-round tie at home to Droylsden.
But Derbyshire, for whom Bosman is playing in this season’s Friends Provident t20, pulled the plug on the idea late on Friday night after they claimed he did not hold the correct visa to play recreational cricket.
Did it matter? Did it ’eck as like, as some utter in these parts.
Up stepped teenagers Adam Hayes and Alex Peters to hit 113 and 112 not out respectively in Greenfield’s massive score of 314 for three, the duo recording their maiden centuries in first-team cricket.
The 18-year-olds came together on 87 for two, and went on to add 219 for the third wicket.
Droylsden, probably slight favourites before the start of play, were shell-shocked, and managed 176 for nine in reply. Rob Tipping was unable to bat after sustaining an injury while fielding.
Greenfield will face neighbours Uppermill in the semi-finals after Alex Griffiths’ side came through an enthralling contest at Stayley.
The hosts were dismissed for 194, but Uppermill looked to have it all to do when, with a single delivery remaining, they needed two to tie and three to win.
But cometh the hour, cometh the man. Number 11 Andrew Jones smashed a six over the longest part of the ground to shatter Stayley’s hopes of a last-four berth.
The other semi-final will feature Hollinwood and cup holders Bamford Fieldhouse.
Hollinwood, who are getting into gear after a difficult start to the campaign, defeated Moorside by seven wickets at Lime Lane.
Danny Anchor struck a stubborn 57 in the visitors’ total of 144 for seven, but paid man Aamir Bashir responded with an unbeaten 71.
Bamford, targeting back-to-back league and cup doubles, brushed aside Saddleworth at Well-i-Hole.
Requiring 174 to win, Paddy McKeown’s side reached their goal with all 10 wickets standing.
Dave Roberts, with a superb 106, led the way, while opening partner Simon Marshall made 51.
