BOWLS:
STEVE Copeland is in terrific form as he prepares for his attempt to win the Oldham Evening Chronicle Bowl for a fourth time.
Copeland, who takes on Darren Griffiths in the quarter-finals at North Chadderton SC on July 10, was the stand-out performer at home as Central Lancs and Pennines blew away Birkenhead 25-6 in Sunday’s British Parks Champinship group fixture.
On his former home green of Royton, Copeland demolished the luckless Rob Preston 21-3 as Central had 10 winners in a 229-187 success.
There were also home wins for Tonge’s Colin Lane and Mark Dwayre, the latter hitting back from 12-0 down to win 21-17.
Central had eight winners in their 229-191 victory at Tixall BC, Springbank’s Martin Hodson winning 21-18 on his debut.

SPRINGBANK’S Paul Heap and Jimmy Hynes are through to the finals of the £1,550 J W Lees Classic at Hopwood Unionist Club, Heywood.
Heap progressed with a 21-16 defeat of Dukinfield’s Dave Gwilliam and 21-6 dismissal of Ashton’s Paul Leah.
And Hynes went through thanks to a 21-14 verdict against Flixton’s Mike Geraghty and 21-20 defeat of Joe Carr (Tottington).
The remaining last-day qualifiers for the finals on Sunday (2pm) were Middleton’s Garry Coverdale and Hyde’s Gareth Gwilliam, while other local players in the finals are Andrew Buckley and Gary Ellis.
Bidwell on the mark
ALAN Bidwell won the Oldham Veterans’ League’s McIntosh Cup when he defeated Stuart Bentley (North Chadderton) 21-13 in the final at Royton.
In the semi-finals, Bidwell beat Dennis Hoyle (Tonge) 21-18, while Bentley saw off Dennis Lord (North Chadderton) by the same score.
