Werneth course ‘a credit’

GOLF:

WERNETH’s course received high praise from the professionals when it hosted the second year of its Pro-Am.

Played for the first time in 2009 as part of the centenary celebrations, 27 teams took part in the event won by the Fireside Corner trio of Steve McNamara, Duncan Hough, Shaun Rattigan, plus professional Aran Wainwright with an 18-under-par 118 total.

PGA North’s Andrew Chadwick said afterwards: “I lost count of the number of professional who praised the magnificent condition of the greens. They were a credit to the club.”

The £500 bonus put up by event sponsors Joseph Parr (Alco Ltd) for a new professional course record was not won as a strong breeze limited the individual scoring to a pair of 63s by Barry Taylor and ex-European Tour player Paul Carman.

The record was set last year, a seven-under-par 61 by Brid-lington’s Alex Belt, who has now moved up to the EuroPro circuit.
