Stamford on title charge

GOLF:

STAMFORD stormed into contention for the Oldham and District ‘A’ Division crown with an 8-0 whitewash of Saddleworth.

That enabled them to leapfrog favourites Denton, who could only manage a 5-3 home win against Oldham

It’s still Ashton who lead the way after they claimed a 6-2 home win over Werneth, but they have played a game more – as have Dukinfield, who stayed up with the pace with a 7-1 thumping of lowly Brookdale.

It’s close, too, in the ‘B’ Division with Saddleworth doing their cause no harm with a 6-2 home win against rivals Stamford while Brookdale and Denton stuttered.

And in the ‘C’ Division, Blackley ‘B’ put a big dent in their own ‘A’ team’s chances of the title by beating them 5-3!

Houldsworth continue to top the Oldham and District Rabbits League table with 37 points despite being held to a 4-4 draw at Fairfield.

Second-placed Stamford's 5-3 win over Brookdale closed the gap, while the latter club - having played one less league match than the top two - climbed above Oldham, who are down to to fourth.

Oldham were in fine form in the cup, beating Dukinfield 13-3, a result which means Houldsworth will play in the final no matter what the outcome of the match between themselves and Dukinfield next week.
