Flawless Stamford rush to top spot

GOLF: STAMFORD produced a spectacular 8-0 win at Brookdale to take over top spot in the Oldham and District Golf League’s ‘A’ division.

And with Ashton being hammered by the same scoreline at Denton, it is looking more like a two-horse race although Dukinfield - who have played a game more - just about stayed in contention by beating Oldham 8-0.

Werneth’s season continued to improve with a 6-2 home win over Saddleworth which saw them jump from bottom to fifth.

It’s still too tight to call in the ‘B’ division with four fixtures to play.

Denton and Saddleworth are tied at the top after victories — Denton’s 6-2 was particularly impressive as it was at Ashton — while Stamford checked reigning champions Brookdale’s progress with a 6-2 verdict.

In the ‘C’ division, North Manchester ‘A’ had an open date and saw Blackley ‘A’ go past them following an 8-0 win which put paid to Fairfield’s hopes.

And Crompton and Royton ‘B’ did their own ‘A’ team no favours by taking three points off them in the narrowest of defeats in their derby clash.
