Greater Manchester to face champions in women’s semi-final

LOCAL bowlers produced a starring role as Greater Manchester women defeated North Shropshire by 34 chalks in Sunday’s County Championship match.

Eileen Dawson (21-10), Alma Tickle (21-12), Chris Kewley (21-17), Janelle Pertoldi (21-15) and Karen Houlston (21-14) were successful in the home leg at Delph as Manchester won 248-178. Joan Horton and Diane Bowler both played with credit to be edged out 21-20.

Manchester lost 209-173 in the away leg, but were comfortable winners of the overall aggregate to make it four wins from as many group games.

Greater Manchester will take on last year’s champions Warwickshire in the semi-finals.

GARY Ellis is the runaway leader in the money-winning stakes this season after picking up another £1,000 with victory in the Freeport Fleetwood Bowling Classic.
In a repeat of the Waterloo Spring Classic final which he won, Ellis defeated Blackpool’s Darren Edmondson 21-11.

Earlier, he had beaten his Tonge team-mate Andrew Cairns 21-15 in the quarter-finals and Kevin Boon (Congleton) 21-14 in the semis.

FAILSWORTH’S Lee Lawton reached the finals of the Moorside Classic with a 21-14 third-round verdict over Colin Brooks (Royton).
Other third-round scores: Chris Brown 21, Kerry Morris 19; Dave Gwilliam 21, Darren Plenderleith 20; Robert Hitchen 18, Mark Ferris 21.

NOEL Burrows, one of the game’s greatest-ever players and ambassadors, has won the All-England Merit at the age of 66.

The Stockport Merit champion rolled back the years with a vintage display at Fleetwood which culminated in a 21-16 final defeat of Derbyshire champion Andrew Spragg.

DAVID Copeland and his son Jonathan (Chadderton) lost 21-17 to Peter Craig and Andrew Cairns (Syke) in the third round of the Thwaites men’s pairs at Norden BC.
