On-field row leads to spell on the sidelines

MILNROW batsman Max Power and Monton and Weaste all-rounder Ashraf Gorsi sat out Sunday's Lake Garage CLL action when they served the first of two-match bans.

League secretary Alan Wright said the pair were involved in a verbal altercation during the recent clash between the two clubs.

Despite being told to cool it by both captains, Power and Gorsi continued to exchange words and both were reported to the league, which imposed a two-match ban on both.

They will complete their sentence on Saturday when they will be unavailable for their clubs.

Power was banned for a further four matches, suspended until the end of the 2013 season.

Gorsi was banned for a total of four matches, but two of these were suspended until the end of next season.

Should neither offend again, they will not serve these extra bans, said Mr Wright, who also pointed out that the more severe punishment for Power had nothing to do with an incident earlier this season which led to Crompton professional Matthew Needham being disciplined by the CLL.

Power was not charged over the incident which saw Needham bowl a beamer at him, but had been before the league three or four seasons ago, said the league secretary.

n KAREN Wade, wife of Royton CC stalwart Bernard, will walk up Snowdon tomorrow week in order to raise money for the Christie Hospital in Manchester.

She is doing so in memory of Jackie Procter, the late mother of Royton professional Luke, and Royton member Karen Green.

Mrs Wade, a self-confessed novice when it comes to tackling mountains, will be accompanied by her husband, who is an experienced walker.

Luke's collections are going to the same cause, while ex-Royton cricket chairman Ian McGeary is doing his bit with a sponsored slim.

Players from Oldham and Royton’s first teams observed a minute’s silence for Jackie, ex-chairperson of Oldham, before Sunday’s derby match at the Pollards.
