REFEREE Nick Gibbons has been given the all-clear to run the line in Football League games this season.

The Oldham official has achieved level three status following a fitness test and exam, which allows him to be an assistant referee in npower League One and League Two.

He is the first member of the Lancashire FA to reach this level, having spent 10 years at level four.

Gibbons (pictured) said: “I am buzzing. I can’t wait to run the line in my first Football League match.

“Level three also allows me to referee in the Conference North.

“I’m just waiting on a telephone call now to find out when I make my Football League debut.”

Gibbons, who refereed more than 100 matches last term, including the North-West Counties League Cup final.

He admitted he has suffered one slight hiccup ahead of the new campaign.

“I have fractured a few of my ribs,” he said.

“I was playing in a referees’ tournament at Hyde United and was injured in a pretty tough challenge.

“Hopefully it won’t delay my start to the season.”
